Designing an Office for The New Generation

Today, it isn’t uncommon to have 3 different generations all working at the same place. All three generations have different work styles.  From the baby boomers to the Generation X and Y crowd, there are major difference that managers need to be aware of.

For baby boomers, they tend to like things that are more formal. A sense of hierarchy is clear to them for knowing who is suppose to do what and to delegate work tasks.  As we move to the younger generation, things start becoming more flexible, open and non-hierarchical. Thus we see it reflected in office design.  Office design focused more on providing an open space that is more interactive and mobile.

Younger generations want a space that they can personalize and call their own while older employees are used to more corporate and formal feel. Cubicles and private offices are a symbol of the baby boomer generation. However, it is important to note that every workplace will have a mix of different personality types. The more introverted workers will want privacy to concentrate on their work. Extroverts will be more comfortable with sharing work spaces with everyone else. It is important to have a good mix of both in the office so your employees can feel comfortable.

For the new college generation, they are used to the college environment. It is collaborative, flexible and technology-driven. If they are coming into a work environment that is not setup to encourage this, it will be hard to retain employees. The talent will go to a company that can provide that college atmosphere.
